Teaching
Since 2017 I have taught music privately and in schools such as Music Conservatory of Westchester, Hoff-Barthelson Music School, Wonderful World International Music School, and the Arthur Satz Music Department at the University of Rochester. I am passionate about music education, and I find great joy in helping people acquire the tools they need to express themselves musically. I have taught students from age 4 to 64, and I have taught complete beginners as well as aspiring professional musicians.
With my youngest students and beginners, I incorporate ideas from the Suzuki Method. I completed a teacher training course in this method in March 2024. I like to introduce the elements of music with games and activities, and from the first lesson I encourage them to listen actively and create their own music. Aside from introducing my students to classical guitar repertoire and technique, I make arrangements of music they listen to for pleasure – from pop and rock songs, to jazz standards and folk tunes.
With more advanced students I draw on my years of study with musical luminaries at conservatories in the US and Europe. I am especially fascinated by music history and the interpretative process. I work with my students to solve problems pertaining to technique and sound production, and I help them to discover the elements of phrasing and musical style. My goal is to bring their playing level up to a professional standard by encouraging them to cultivate their own unique musical voice.
